The Salvation Army needed a better system for managing their

2 million+ annual donations.

The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehab Centers facilitate nearly 2 million donation pick-ups annually. These items are then distributed to their Family stores where they are sold. The revenue is used to help provide services for substance abuse treatment and recovery programs, helping approximately 30 million people annually. To help them manage their entire donation process, we built Donation Services System (DSS).

In 1995, a branch of Salvation Army, the Adult Rehab Center, recruited Devnext to write software that would allow them to increase efficiency. Devnext began studying the donation process from beginning to end - from the operators in the call-center scheduling donation pickups, through logistics and administration, dispatching, and finally to inventory management. The first piece of software that was built was for the call center, and allowed operators to schedule 3X as many tickets as before. Next, Devnext tackled logistics, and created an algorithm to determine the quickest, most efficient routes for the trucks to take, based on the distance between each pickup and the size of the items being collected. In just weeks after the beta version was released, the trucks were completing twice as many pickups. After creating a robust admin side to DSS, managers and stakeholders were able to see analytics based on the data being collected, and easily identify areas to make improvements.

 

The DSS application suite has continued to grow into what is now 13 pieces of custom software, running nationwide on multiple platforms, that streamline every step of the donation process.
